The rock art on Nugal country is an extension of the Laura sandstone escarpment and reflects the Laura rock art style, while depicting historical events, myths and legends particular to the Nugal-warra people, members of the Guugu Yimithirr tribe.
Guurrbi Tours gives you the opportunity to visit some of these rock art sites in the company of a Nugal-warra Elder. The sites, set in a dramatic landscape, include the Reconciliation Cave which portrays a heart-warming story of acceptance and compassion, and an ancestral Birthing Cave which is a place of particular importance to the clan.
"We want to share the stories that the rock art depicts. These are stories that can only be told by Elders of our clan, as they give us our history, our identity, and our sense of belonging. We would like to give you an insight into our culture and society, and to have the opportunity to share with you our ancient philosophy which shows us how to engage the environment in order to better understand ourselves." Wilfred Gordon, Nugal-warra Elder.
Two-hour and four-hour tours from Hope Vale are available, either self-drive, or with transport from Cooktown provided. Private and tailor-made tours are also available. All tours should be booked at least one day in advance.
